What I did this summer….

As Summer comes to a draw I’d like to share how I spent the best three weeks of my summer doing what I love. For years, I’ve wanted to pursue a career in fashion. First I wanted to be a designer, then I wanted to be a merchant, and now I’m convinced that I want to study something that merges my passion for writing and fashion, fashion journalism. As a 15th birthday present instead of asking for a big quinceañera party as is customary in South America, I wanted to be different. So I decided to do something I had been wanting to do for a while, to attend the precollege summer workshops at FIT in New York City. FIT, which stands for Fashion Institute of Technology is one of the most renowned fashion universities in the world having produced alumni who have taken the fashion world by storm. Among the most notable of them are Reem Acra, Calvin Klein, Nanette Lepore, and Nina Garcia.

I participated in the summer live programme which lasted three weeks. You could choose to take either one or two classes. I decided to take fashion merchandising in the morning and photography in the afternoon. Each class lasted three hours which the professors packed full of information, fun, and field trips. In my fashion merchandising class, we went to the Tommy Hilfiger office, Fashion Snoops (a subscription only trend forecasting service) and Vigoss denim. With my photography class, we took trips to the Highline, the Chelsea Galleries, the FIT museum and the area around 27th street, which is where FIT is located. In fashion merchandising we talked about everything that has to do with selling. Whether a shop’s assortment is broad and shallow, or narrow and deep. What brands are considered designer, contemporary, better, bridge, moderate, or budget. We discussed the fashion cycle, the positions in a fashion company, and a lot of college-related topics. During the course, we were introduced to trend forecasting, and we talked about styling, which is why we had a guest lecture by Gill Topol, a stylist who has worked with everyone from Beyoncé (who sings on her answering machine) and Destiny’s Child, to the Jonas Brothers, and Justin Timberlake (who she sang karaoke with). In photography, we learnt how to adjust our camera settings to create beautiful images for our portfolios and final projects. We shot using different apertures and shutter speeds, on manual, portraits with a variety of studio lights, environmental portraits and architecture. Our professor introduced us to the work of many renowned photographers, such as Annie Leibowitz, and showed us how they created certain effects so we could achieve similar results. It was definitely not a conventional summer, as most people my age are lounging by the pool, or the beach, hanging out with their friends, or going shopping, while I was in the city studying and learning about what I’m passionate about. Though there was a lot of work involved, such as powerpoints, portfolios, and final projects, and some pretty short deadlines, I would take this course again in a heartbeat, because the memories, and friendships I made are ones that will stay with me forever.

So, that was the most exciting part of my summer in a nutshell! If you follow me on my other social media accounts you will know I also went to Argentina, my home country, and moved to Brussels, Belgium! If any of you reading this are not yet college-aged, I would highly, highly, highly recommend taking one of the precollege programs at FIT. It has been one of the most positive experiences of my life and has made me fall in love with fashion all over again!

XOXO, Sofia
